2025 Seoul Lantern Festival & Gwanghwamun Market

In December, Korea comes alive with special festivals that bid farewell to the old year and welcome the new. Among them, two Seoul events are especially inviting for international visitors: the “Seoul Lantern Festival” along Cheonggyecheon Stream and the “Gwanghwamun Market” in the heart of the city.

The Seoul Lantern Festival is an iconic winter festa, where hundreds of lanterns drift above the stream, casting a warm, magical glow over the city. Since its inception in 2009, the festival has grown into its 16th edition this year, promising an even more enchanting experience. Over 200 Hanji (traditional Korean paper) light sculptures will blend with media art to create dreamlike scenes, while interactive programs let visitors create their own special memories. The festival runs from Dec. 12, 2025, to Jan. 4, 2026.

Alongside the lanterns, the Gwanghwamun Market transforms the square into a cozy, storybook village perfect for the Christmas season at Gwanghwamun Square. Among tall buildings, twinkling lights and glowing windows, visitors can wander through charming photo zones, savor delicious treats and browse unique handcrafted goods.

Last year, over 63,000 people joined in the festive fun, and this year promises even more surprises with a wider variety of participating businesses. For anyone visiting Seoul in December, it’s a moment of magic not to be missed.
