Incheon’s Yeongjong-do Island, home to Incheon International Airport, is where most trips to Korea begin and end. But some will be surprised to learn that the island is a destination in its own right. With a blend of recreational options and natural attractions, Yeongjong-do is an excellent choice for both thrill seekers and those in need of a little R&R.

Yeongjong-do in Incheon, about an hour by subway from Seoul, is an island at the far edge of the city, where it meets the Yellow Sea. From a distance, it may seem endlessly quiet, but look closer, and it is home to Incheon International Airport, where the area comes alive at the end of the year, bustling with travelers heading abroad for business or leisure.

Inside the airport, those setting out on their journeys and those returning home intermingle, freely making use of the cafés, restaurants, bookstores and convenience stores throughout the terminals.
Among the airport’s ample amenities, your eyes are drawn to media art displays. One panoramic screen displays gorgeous scenes such as paper lanterns floating upward at dusk, while an interactive screen—spanning a three-story building—responds to your gestures. You may also encounter a virtual reality booth presenting Korea’s finest cultural heritage and the K-Culture Museum, featuring large-scale media art pieces and activities offering a taste of Korean aesthetics. Elsewhere in the airport, one massive wall depicts a grand spectacle of 530 national treasures from around the peninsula. There are so many sights to discover on a stroll here that the airport can feel more like an exquisite hub of art than a mere gateway to other places.
Stepping outside the airport, you will find grand hotels and resorts close at hand. Beyond the accommodations they offer, they also function as cultural hotspots. Shuttles stopping at the airport will soon shuttle you to one of these sites, which are almost too big for the eye to take in.

Le Space, at INSPIRE Entertainment Resort, offers media art on a grander space than anything seen at the airport. This exhibition aspires to take guests on “a sensory journey through light and space” where they can encounter other planets and manifold lifeforms on a whirlwind tour of the universe. It feels almost like a sci-fi movie come to life. As you explore the exhibition, media art in each area creates the impression, in turn, of flying on a spaceship, going on a space walk and exploring a lava plateau. The views are accentuated by background music and sound effects, as well as aromas that maximize the impact in each space, making for an intensely immersive experience.
It’s easy to lose track of time at Le Space, but the entire resort feels much like an open-air exhibition. The LED panels overhead are constantly changing—depicting first a jungle, and then a pod of whales in serene movement. Judging by the people posing for photographs and admiring their surroundings as they might a renowned work of art, INSPIRE has earned a reputation as a must-see destination.

서울에서 지하철로 약 1시간이면 닿는 인천 영종도는 바다와 맞닿은 섬이다. 멀리서 보면 이곳은 조용하고 고요하지만, 그 중심은 인천공항이 있어 활기로 가득하다.
인천공항 안은 여행을 시작하는 사람과 마치는 사람이 뒤섞여 카페며 식당, 서점, 편의점 등 공항 내 시설을 자유롭게 이용하고 있다.인천공항의 편의 시설 너머 시선을 사로잡는 것이 있다면, 바로 화려한 미디어 아트들이다. 풍등이 날아가는 저녁노을 전경과 같은 아름다운 장면이 파노라마처럼 눈앞에 펼쳐내는 작품이나 사용자의 손짓에 반응하는 건물 3층 높이의 거대한 미디어 아트가 흥미를 끈다. 공항을 누비며 한국적 미감을 즐길 수 있는 대형 미디어 아트 전시와 체험 프로그램이 마련된 K-Culture Museum과, 한국의 국가유산을 VR로 체험하는 부스도 마주한다. 공항 한편에선 남북한 국보 530개가 대형 미디어 월 위로 구현되며 장관을 이룬다. 볼거리들이 어찌나 다양한지, 걷다 보면 인천공항이 어디론가 향하기 위한 관문이 아닌, 즐거움으로 가득한 아트 허브로 느껴진다.
공항을 나와 근처 대형 호텔과 리조트로 향한다. 그곳들이 단순 숙박 공간이 아닌 문화 공간으로서 기능하고 있기 때문이다. 공항 터미널까지 찾아오는 셔틀을 타고 이동하면, 어느새 한눈에 다 담지도 못할 거대한 공간들이 하나둘씩 나타난다.
그중 인스파이어 리조트의 르 스페이스에선, 공항에서 본 것과는 다른 차원의 미디어아트가 펼쳐진다. ‘시공간을 넘나드는 게이트를 통해 새로운 차원의 우주, 행성, 생명체를 만난다’라는 주제의 전시는 SF 영화가 실제가 된 듯한 경험을 선사한다. 모든 공간 요소가 미디어 아트와 결합해 발걸음을 옮길 때마다, 우주선 안에 있는 것 같기도, 우주 속으로 뛰어든 것 같기도, 용암 대지를 걷는 것 같기도 한 감각을 선사한다. 함께 어우러지는 배경음악과 음성, 그리고 각 공간의 매력을 극대화하는 향까지 더해져, 작품에 끝없이 몰입하게 된다.전시를 보고 났더니 어느새 시간이 훌쩍 지났다. 영종도의 다음 장소로 이동하며 마주한 리조트의 또 다른 공간도 그 자체로 하나의 전시장 같다. 하늘을 덮는 LED 패널이 때론 밀림을, 때론 유유히 헤엄치는 고래 떼를 보여주며 시시각각 모습을 바꾸고 있었기 때문이다. 가만히 서서 기념사진을 찍거나 작품을 한없이 바라보는 사람들의 즐거운 모습을 보다 보니, 이 공간을 작품으로 느끼는 것은 단순한 개인의 생각이 아님을 깨닫는다.
While there’s nothing wrong with making the rounds of indoor entertainment, another big draw on Yeongjong-do is its gorgeous outdoor scenery, which makes for a fascinating contrast with the island’s flashy modern media offerings.
Yeongjong-do used to be a small island. But in the 1990s, the government filled in the surrounding waters to connect it with smaller islands nearby, resulting in the island we know today. That’s why a short drive—or bus or train ride—from Incheon International Airport will soon bring you to the seashore. When the tide is out, people can be seen out on the mudflats, digging for clams. And when the tide is in, sunlight glitters on the sea all the way out to the horizon.

Given its geographical position, Yeongjong-do’s coastline is dotted with amenities—including some top-notch coffee shops that are definitely worth a visit. The island’s coffee shops, like many in Korea, tend to be based in big buildings and organized around a unique theme. Stop by one of these roomy coffee shops to spend a few relaxing hours admiring the endless horizon while you savor freshly baked goods and refreshing beverages.
But it would be a shame if visiting a café were the only thing you did on Yeongjong-do. Since the island is enveloped by the ocean, there’s a plethora of seafood options to sample. As suggested by the broad mudflats spreading all around, the island’s eateries are replete with a range of shellfish. The coffee shops along the coast are interspersed with restaurants, many of which have terraces where guests can dig into jogaegui (grilled clams). From your seat on the terrace, you can expect a splendid view of beachcombers below, mudflats all around, islets far away and the blue sky above. Against this stunning backdrop, you are sure to enjoy shellfish dipped in cheese sauce or gochujang (chili pepper paste) and a bowl of kalguksu (noodle soup) bobbing with seafood. Can you imagine a more satisfying meal?

The ocean has been a constant presence on your trip, but it’s time to get better-acquainted. Yeongjong-do’s most famous beach is Eurwang-ri Beach. Given its proximity and its excellent views, the beach is a favorite destination for residents of nearby Seoul and Gyeonggi-do Province. It is common to see couples doing an engagement photo shoot and children playing in the sand in the ruddy glow of the sunset.
The crash of the waves, the murmur of conversation, the salt tang of the sea and the blazing sun reflected in the sea encourage contemplation. Whether it’s the beginning or end of your trip, this is a moment to treasure for years to come. And as your visit to this island comes to an end, you may find yourself promising to return in the fullness of time.

영종도의 실내 엔터테인먼트 콘텐츠를 찾아다니는 것도 좋지만, 이곳의 또 다른 매력은 화려하고 현대적인 콘텐츠와는 대조되는 아름답고 고즈넉한 자연이다.
사실 영종도는 작은 섬이었으나, 1990년대에 인천국제공항을 만들고자 바다에 흙을 메워 주변 작은 섬들을 연결하며 지금의 영종도가 탄생했다. 그래서 영종도는 인천국제공항을 출발점으로 해서 조금만 차를 몰거나, 기차와 버스 등의 대중교통을 이용하면 금세 해안가를 보여준다. 썰물 때는 갯벌과 그곳에서 일하는 사람들이 정겨운 풍경을 그려내고, 밀물 때는 끝없는 지평선과 하늘빛을 받아내는 물결이 아름다운 바다를 어디서든 볼 수 있다는 얘기다.
이런 지형 덕에, 영종도 해안가에는 바다에 면한 편의 시설이 무척이나 많다. 그중에서도 카페는 여행객이라면 한 번쯤 방문하기 좋은 곳이다. 영종도의 카페들은, 넓은 공간을 자랑하거나 특별한 콘셉트를 갖춘 한국 카페의 전형적인 특징을 보여주기 때문이다. 널찍한 공간에서 갓 구운 빵과 신선한 음료를 곁들이며 끝없이 펼쳐지는 지평선을 앞에 두고 한없이 한가로운 시간을 보내보자.
그러나 영종도까지 와서 카페만 방문하는 것은 아쉽다. 영종도 일대는 조수간만의 차가 커 갯벌이 널찍하고, 다양한 종류의 조개들이 많이 잡히기 때문이다. 해안가에는 카페뿐만 아니라 식당들도 많이 모여있고, 이들 대부분이 조개구이를 판매하며 테라스까지 갖추고 있으니, 마음에 드는 곳을 골라 조개구이를 맛보면 된다.
어느 한 가게 야외 테라스에 자리를 잡는다. 멀리 보이는 작은 섬, 널찍한 갯벌, 해안가를 거니는 사람들, 푸른 하늘의 조화가 퍽 아름답다. 이 장면을 반찬 삼아, 불에 구운 조개를 치즈나 고추장에 찍어 먹고, 해산물이 듬뿍 들어간 라면과 칼국수까지 즐겨본다. 더할 나위 없이 만족스러운 한 끼다.
여행 내내 즐거움이 되어 주었던 바다로 한발 가까이 다가간다. 영종도에서 가장 유명한 해수욕장은 을왕리 해수욕장이다. 가깝기도 가깝고, 정경도 아름다워 인근의 서울이나 경기 지역의 사람들이 자주 찾는 곳이란다. 붉게 지는 노을 앞에서 누군가는 결혼사진을 촬영하고, 누군가는 가족과 함께 모래로 장난을 치고 있다.
파도가 자갈에 부딪히는 소리, 사람들의 대화 소리, 약간은 짭짜름한 바다 냄새, 타오르는 듯 붉은 태양이 인상적인 장면을 만든다. 그 정경을 바라보고 있자니, 이곳에서 누군가가 여정을 시작하든 여정을 마무리하든, 영종도는 그 순간을 기념적으로만 만들어줄 것이라는 확신이 든다. 그러니 오늘 여정을 마무리하며, 무언가의 시작과 끝을 매듭지을 땐, 영종도를 다시 찾겠다고 다짐한다.
