Just as the name implies, the demilitarized zone (DMZ) is a region that has to remain demilitarized.
The 1953 Korean War armistice agreement created the 4km-wide, 248km-long buffer known as DMZ.
This was followed by 65 years of paradox, with both Koreas guarding the ‘demilitarized’ zone to the
full extent of their military capacity. It was the nation’s greatest tragedy, a sight that could be seen only in Korea.
With the leaders of the two Koreas pledging peace through the Panmunjeom Declaration of the 2018
Inter-Korean Summit, the DMZ is now transforming into a land of hope. The world is hoping for the
DMZ to move on from the legacy of the Cold War to a landmark of peace on the Korean Peninsula.
